Sidney
Certainly Sidney is a prodigy to be reckoned with. He discovered his musical talent whilst in school. After completing his secondary school education his talent has been developing very fast. Now Sidney finds him self performing in grand style.
Sidney a.k.a. the Hiplife Ninja, a namcompatible and synonymous with music and hiplife lovers in the country, was born on 3rd June 1977 to Madam Gladys Kwarteng and the late Daniel Owusu Ofori respectively in Accra. Sidney attended his Nursery Education at Buckman Nursery School and then to New Royal International School (Accra) for Elementary Education.
Sidney sat for his common entrance and gained admission to Harvard College (Accra). He left Harvard and attended the West African Secondary School. He completed 1996. He did a Diploma in Business Studies, marketing (social option) at the Institute of Professional Studies (I.P.S) and still in school.
He traces his musical talent from his great grand father “Osei Kwame” who is believed to be the first musician in Ghana to have his works on a record (gramophone plate) and cousin to the hiplife godfather, Reggie Rockstone. His mentor, Eddy BLAY Jnr, leader of the NFL music rap group boosted Sidney’s talent even further. Sidney joined with Pozo and Jyot (West African Secondary School mates) to form Nananom and gain laurels. The group dramatically swept two prestigious awards (the best native Rap group and talent discovery of the year).
NANANOM released “Nana Kasa” (speak O King) their first album the following year, sold a whooping 60,000 copies within a month with “Wokyere Wo ho”(you bluff) and “Ofie Ne Fie” (no place like home) being the favorites of many. A year later by which time Pozo had opted out, the group released the second album “Nana- Nono” (that is the king) with hits like “Everything is Gonna Be Right” and “Washeda Anaa” making a tremendous impact.
In 2001, Sidney went solo with greater enthusiasm and innovation. He came out with songs like “U Go Say”, “Tinana”, and “Kyeere Me” which rocked the airwaves in a whirlwind fashion much to the amazement of his contemporaries in the industry. The album endears him to many more fans within and outside the country that see him mounting various stages in Togo, Benin, the UK, Amsterdam, Germany, Italy, Belgium and many more to showcase the art.
In 2002, Sidney released on the most controversial song of all times. ABUSEKELEKE which even went to parliament for discussion. Abusekeleke, according to Sidney simply means”good investment”, but on the other hand it is also used to tease people who dresses provocatively. This album sold a record 400,000 copies and still continuous to sell (a record in the history of hiplife).
Now unstoppable, the ninja as he is affectionately called by fans has released his 5th album. “Scenti Noo!!!” A hilarious, informative and educative song on hygiene, it shook the airwaves in late 2003. People have politicized the song with political parties fighting to use the slogan to their advantage; even the Chief Executive of Ghana (the President of the Republic) endorses it.
Sidney, a Christian by faith, believes that with God all things are possible. His amazement is money, how it rules the world, and yet people who can’t afford medical care are left to die. To him it’s a tragedy.
Sidney is currently embarking on a campaign against children being used as soldiers in times of war. It’s a practice we must condemn in totality, they deserve education not combat.
“Give Them the Pen, not the gun” is a single song dedicated to all child soldiers in the world especially in Africa; it features Dr. Kaunda, his lyrical mate and King Ayisoba (a traditional singer).
With a deep sense of humanity, Sidney is appealing to everybody to get on-board especially, ECOWAS, AFRICAN UNION, the UNITED NATIONS and other NGOs IN THE WORLD. SIDNEY OFORI a.k.a the Hiplife Ninja, now with three most controversial hits in a row TINANA-ABUSKELEKE-SCENTI NO!!! is definitely ready for Africa and the world.
